I'm a die-hard 2E person, it's what I've played and it's what I know. But I've been thinking of trying out 3E with my group just to see how it runs. What's a good 3X starter adventure?

I was thinking of this boxed set:

We are playing Burnt Offerings for nearly a year, it's pretty good for a start, simple. I needed two additional plots to go along with the story. Varisians are easily replaced by the Gur people.

Holy Cow! Just looked on ebay. Only one listing for Burnt Offerings and it's $90!

LOL, believe it or not I had gotten the Sunless Citadel a long time ago, back when 3.0 came out. I decided it was a good opportunity to finally put that money to use, so I put the players through it, and the group is just now finishing up that adventure. But I had converted it to 2E.

The group has definately had problems with the adventure, it's not quite as easy as you would think for 1st level characters. We came very close to a TPK several occasions but I had to pull back the killing blow and go easy on them. They only ended up losing 2 characters through it.

The Crucible of Freya rocks and as a starter to it you can still get The Wizard's Amulet as a lead in to Crucible as a free PDF that you can then print off and use.

Fiz, the Crucible of Freya is a good starter if you're running from the 3.0 rules. Another good starter (if you can find it) is The Sunless Citadel by Bruce R. Cordell. It's part of a whole series of adventures using the new (well, new back then) 3.0 rules, published by Wizards of the Coast.

I've run both adventures in my Realms campaign for my friends and enjoyed them.

I had a bad experience with the Sunless Citadel. Upon moving to Virginia 9(!) years ago, the wife and I were looking for a gaming group and came across one of those bad DM's everyone talks about (required you to fill out a 10 page booklet detailing your character and what levels/feats/skills they would take in the future). Needless to say, we were talking with his regular members about the group and it turns out he'd been running the Sunless Citadel for them for SIX months. Turns out the first run through, he got a TPK on the shadows in the first room, but instead of cutting a break, they had to continually roll up new characters and did NOT allow them to create clerics or buy anything that would help them defeat the shadows since "the new characters wouldn't know about them".

Yep, that was a good session. We broke for dinner and me & the missus made an excuse that we forgot we were meeting some friends later in the evening and never went back.

Well, the nice thing about 3.5 and Pathfinder is that you can get all the basic rules for free online: d20SRD.org and PRD

Actually what I was planning was just taking a little "break" from our normal campaign to run this 3X adventure just to see how things went and to see if the players like the changes or not. Most of my players are familiar with the old 2E rules themselves. Despite being a die-hard 2E fan, I do admit that it's not always the easiest system to grasp, even for people who have been playing for a long time.

The fact that your low-level players will be terrified of goblins by the end of the adventure is just gravy.

Edit: And if you decide to go with the Pathfinder rules instead, it takes a little time to convert, but not that much.

I really dont know anything about either system. I do already own a 3.0 PHB, I bought it long ago when it first came out. After reading it, that's when I decided I didn't like 3.0 and was going to stick with 2E. I just bought a 3.0 DMG on ebay since it was cheap. I figured I'd read through it and see what I thought of that. I figure if my players like the way the game plays vs our 2E game, I'd probably just go to 3.5.

One of the things I like about 2E is that there is a lot of source material, and it's all cheaply had on ebay.

1) Sandpoint is located in Varisia, on the southern side of the Varisian Bay. As for the Realms, I think Harrowdale might be best, but the High Forest or Western Heartlands might work as well.

2) I show the fonts as being Banshee, CC Treacherous, Jubilee, Largo, Lassigue, Nexus Sans, Priori Sans and Verdana. They should all be embedded in the PDF, though.

The nice part of the Rise of the Runelords AP is that it's also very easy to set in another setting. The feel of Golarion is there, but (as I and some other scribes have said before) Golarion feels a lot like Faerūn as well.

I'd have to second Ashe's idea of using Burnt Offerings. It actually made me want to play 3.5 again (with the Pathfinder rules of course) and the way the Goblins act.....well I was terrified when my character was almost thrown into a furnace by the buggers.

And have you decided to go with just 3E or are you going with 3.5E/Pathfinder?? It's a question you should ask yourself since the rule-sets vary on many issues.

As for the Forgotten Realms specifically, there's the Twilight Tomb and the Sons of Grummsh that were done, and I liked them both. Also, both are pretty low in level (less than lvl 6 if I remember correctly).

Additionally, I used the Red Wizards enclave adventure in the back of the FRCS and that went over pretty well too. Good intro to that organization and a quick fun adventure (should take only 1 gaming session if that).

I really like running the "Crucible of Freya" by Necromancer Games. It's one of the older d20 modules, but it flows well and has a Realms-like feel to it. When I ran it for my players, I placed it north of the Moonsea, upriver from Phlan. My players enjoyed it.

I doubt many stores would have a copy in stock, but I've seen them selling on e-bay for no more than $4-5. Necromancer Games still has the product support expansion up on thier website, which continues the adventure into a mini-campaign, taking your players from 1st to 3-4th level.

13 views and no suggestions so far? Surely someone out there has an idea for an easy 3E adventure module that would be good.
