My group will soon be heading out of the small village where their adventuring started, so I want to begin sprinkling details of the area and it's history during the sessions. Problem is, I don't know much!

What I'm looking for is info on the area, either in print or online. I'm not asking for pirated material, rather official or fanmade material that would be helpful.

I know that the 1e Waterdeep and the North would be good, as well as the 3e City of Splendors. But is there anything else that would be necessary to get a good feel for the area?

That's great, everybody! Thanks. I've already begun raiding Ebay and Amazon for this stuff. Already snagged copies of the "Volo's" books!

Go to the man page and look through the shelves.

Might I recommend Campaign Journals - Northern Journey as a good place to start.

Also look for the 3E book Silver Marches.

And, if you can find it, Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast will prove particularly useful also.

WotC offers some older edition FR (and other setting) downloads on their site here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads

Of particular interest to your needs are the supplements Savage North, Volo's Guide to the North, and the North.
