Posted - 06 Jul 2010 : 12:30:30 Ive had a disgusion with my friends about the changes from 3.0 to 3.5 rules. We have been using feats and prestige classes from both rule sets. Now what I want to know is what the changes in the prestige class Arch-Mage is in 3.5 if any. We have many different books and have only agreed to use 3.5 spells. So we have kind of a rule problem as of now.
I have been looking into what I loose or gain from now only using 3.5 rules This especially the Arch mage class.
Could someone please tell me, I havent been able to find anything!
Thanks |

Posted - 06 Jul 2010 : 19:22:24 Hmm, I see that they have not reprinted a few things that were not particularly broken, like Ghostwalker and Master Chain. So my argument from above may not be valid (or I fail to see the broken-ness is those classes). I don't know if Mr. de Bie actually played a Ghostwalker, maybe he could enlighten us |

Posted - 06 Jul 2010 : 19:11:11 I thought that if a PrC wasn't reprinted, then it was considered too powerful (I'm thinking about Ninja of the Crescent Moon from Sword and Fists, for example) and they didn't bother to try to fix it in 3.5. They did reprint all the others in the Complete serie. So basically, I think to be '3.5 approved', a feat/spell/PrC has to be printed in 3.5 (I might be wrong, of course). Usually, if you find something that was only printed in 3.0, it is reeealy good (as in too good). |

Posted - 06 Jul 2010 : 15:00:51 Actually, it's exactly the opposite. Unless something from 3.0 has been reprinted in 3.5, it can be used in 3.5, usually without any modification at all.
As for the mechanics of what changed, Archmage and some others (Red Wizard of Thay, IIRC) lost their boost to spell DC, since that was just way too powerful. Psionics changed completely, getting a new, somewhat-strangely titled book (it wasn't "Expanded" it was a totally new system). Partial actions were eliminated completely, and spells that used partial actions were re-written (cone of cold was an especially egregious offender here).
There are some other things, like they changed the way DR vs magic weapons worked, moving it even further away from its 1e/2e roots, but those are the highlights. But as I said, the rule is that if something hasn't been reprinted in 3.5, it's usable as is in its 3.0 incarnation. Unless, of course, you as DM see something you don't like. |

Posted - 06 Jul 2010 : 12:46:03 If a feat or spell looked very powerful in 3.0, and has not been reprinted in 3.5, it is because the spell/feat was judged too powerful, so it should not be used. Other have been balanced (for better or worse) but kept a similar name. That applies to PrC too, so I only use 3.5 books (at least for crunch).
As for Archmage, the main difference is that Spell Power now increases CASTER LEVEL, and not DC. This is a big change (and probably less powerful). And unless the DM allows it (which he shouldn't) the PC cannot choose the version he prefers, obviously. |

Posted - 06 Jul 2010 : 12:39:08 The 3.5 FR Player's Guide to Faerūn states that not that much changed during the 3.0 and 3.5 regarding the Forgotten Realms. So you might not lose that much, gameplay wise. I believe there are also some web enhancements detailing updated 3.5 rules.
In which book did you find the Arch Mage class? |
