Ok, I'm working up an epic level NPC for a game I am running. This particular NPC will be a druid and will be a nemsis of the druid in the game (She destroyed the enclave that the druid was part of.)
My question is concerning the epic Druid's Animal Companion. In the book it says: The Druid may have a maximum number of Animal Companions equal to twice her class level, as normal.
If this is correct, then a 30th lvl epic Druid could have up to 60 Animal Companions, this doesn't seem right, or is this actually correct? |

http://www.d20srd.org by the way, is as official as it gets. Its not 'just a website' - it is the guidelines that ALL OGL (3e/3.5) developers adhere to, and includes ALL the errata that came out for the 3e and 3.5 books (which is why it had that bit from the errata in it). You cannot find a more accurate and up-to-date listing of the 3rd edition D&D rules, anywhere. |

But the thing is Markustay, it doesn't say anything about there being a limit on HD; just that they are able to have up to twice their level in animal companions. This is why I said to Artemel that I need an actual book listing, not just a website listing that could have been done by anyone.
I mean I could house rule it, but I would really like a book or canon source that I can go off of instead of just having to tell my players that "even though it says it in the DMG that that is how it works, you can't do that." Would that seem fair to you as a player? |

Right, but the total of all their HD still cannot exceed twice that of the Druid's level, hence what Kilvan said - you are way better off with one or two REALLY tough companions, then dozens of cute, little ones.
Besides, the Druid's wildshape already makes it a broken class.  |

There is only one problem with that Artemel. Nowhere in the DMG or in the ELH does it say this, and I checked through the book twice to make sure before posting this.
In the 3.5 DMG it says the exact same thing as in the ELH, that the Druid may have a maximum number of Animal Companions equal to twice her class level, as normal.
I will need a book refrence if I am to go with what you posted, otherwise I have to believe that what is stated in the DMG and the ELH is the actual fact, and that they get more than one animal companion once they reach epic level; which would make an epic Druid totally broken IMO. |

Well, alot of animals have a CR below 1, so it may be possible to have 60 companion of CR 1/2. But I think animal companions are selected depending on their HD, not CR in 3.5, so I don't know.
Note that Epic handbook is 3.0, not 3.5, so maybe it was different back then (unfortunately, I don't own those books, so I can't check). In any case, you are probably better off with a T-rex+++ as a companion at level 30 than 60 (or 600 for that matter) owls or eagles... |
