I tend to stick to The North, here you can find anything for short or longterm adventures. Though I have lett them slipp down to Thetyr to wreak som havoc.

What I tend to do is have them start off with a semi-complicated quest (a main quest, if you will). And as they walka round trying to figure it our, it becomes more complicated and other quest pop up. For an example, your PC's were hired by a rich widow to get back an engagement ring thatw as stolen by a bunch of street thugs (its cheesy but I'm just now making it up). As their looking for the ring, they find out the street thugs are actually an organization of wizards. As the PC's look into this cult thing, they find out their at a war with another cult, and the ring (which hopefully dosn't get forgoptten about in this mess) turns out to be some sort of super magical ring which can summon a demon to kill the other cult.

Mabey its not the best example, but its four in the morning(so tired) over here and this is all just comming off the top of my head.

I agree on FRCS being a necessity. Yet in addition to that Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast (VGttSC) is also very good source material for the area. Though it tends to cover more the eastern and northern part of the Sword Coast. The greenfields area is more or less new, in that it has been named and a town has been put on the map (Greenfields)

I'm not sure if VGttSC is available as a free download, if not it will be in the payable section (unfortunately unavailable to non-US residents).

You've talked a lot about Dwarves helping Thay in quite a few threads, King-Tiax. What I haven't seen yet is why the Dwarves would help them. The entire Thayvian mentality is based on evil, slavery is rife, murder is common - Szass Tamm, a lich, is the Zulkir of Necromancy and the undecalred ruler of the country.

What would the Dwarves gain from an alliance with such a country?

Personally, I haven't encountered dwarves in the Realms (unless you count Duergar) that would ally with Thay.

If I've missed something here, please enlighten me

For the ultimat quest you've got to have Dwarves and Red wizards, maby Thay is attacked and the Dwarves of the Blood shours come to help, hay thats good, i gott'a use it.

I know that, but like to set campaign without big citys like baldurs gate.

I may not be a DM in FR, but I suggest taking a look at the Baulder's Gate games. They do have some information about the area around BG. It helped a lot in the game I play online.

Thanks

Where can find more about that area (east of Baldurs Gate)
3rd or 2nd edition?

For me, the best way to keep things long-term is to start with a very personal quest centering around just one or two characters to start with. Then, as the events unfold, the PCs become more and more motivated to see how things end up...particularly those the quests focus on. As these stories tie up, I always then throw in little tid-bits of what happens next concerning the PCs who weren't focused as much upon(i.e.- the rogue who during the quest has been completely silent gets a visit from his long lost father - a Zhent agent, etc.).
Doing things this way has lots of benefits, as PCs become closer, forming friendships and even romantic relationships that solidify the campaign. This also gives the DM lots of options (what happens if the two newly-married PCs have to be separated for the good of the Realms? What if the two inseparabale comrades are told the other one is a traitor?).
But as always, it's entirely up to you and your table.

3rd edition
Greenfields land betwen dragon coast and baldurs gate

Well that really depends on a lot of factors. First which level do you wish the PC's to start at, what edition you are playing, and where in the realms? The possibilities in the Realms are endless and without a little bit more to go by you can be lost in the possibilities what the realms have to offer.

When has truth been utterly devoid of paradox?
