Posted - 18 Jun 2009 : 13:31:23 I'm getting back into the swing of things after a long time gone, and I came up with this as a way to shrug off some of the rust and hopefully contribute a little something.
It took about 3 hours, it's definitely not perfect, and I'd love any comments/criticisms, because somehow it's magically been 4 years and a fifth of my life since I did this last. |

Posted - 23 Jun 2009 : 02:39:05 I'd rather not. Part of the intent with spell selection was to make the article clear and viable for DMs to deal with as they see fit (especially in the face of including somewhat obscure content from another setting); that's why I didn't include the spells from the Spell Compendium in the first place. For a Realms article, I'll stick to the Realms standard. |

True, and I'll blame that on writing it at 4 am. If you're willing to go a bit further afield, splinterbolt and fireward (both from the Spell Compendium) would be good replacements.
If you're using Spell Compendium anyway crank "Ice Lance" one down, it's in there as a lvl 3 spell |

On the topic of ships: With the article's described rarity, it would take quite the dedicated effort to collect enough darkwood for a ship. Considering the history of unusual woods for Sword Coast shipmaking, though, that fits. From a demand and supply standpoint, though, it does make sense that the far more common zalantar wood is made into ships, especially skyships. Basically, it's a question that doesn't necessitate an answer in the North.

Interesting.
I was thinking somewhere in Thesk myself, so this location works just as well. |

Interestingly.
Anything more you can tell us about the upcoming adventure?
I want to do something simple and site-based, as I'm still finding my sea legs so to speak. The listing in the 3e FRCS suggests a stonedelve, Castle Krag, the Dungeon of the Hark, or Lyrar's Hold, but I'm not too attached to those, if you have a request or suggestion.

As for the stat block, I simply ignored it. I don't like them, so I don't pay any attention to them.
Aye. That was the same with me as well. And, also, the fact that I'm still not all that intimate with the 3e/3.5e rules system. 'Tis the lore I love!
In short, I forgot more than you ever knew! |

Wow, if that's the worst then things have mellowed round here. I'm surprised no one jumped on me for including Eberron material or a stat block in a 3 page article.
As I said above, I liked the fact that you used some of the EB books. I think a lot of the EBERRON material is unfairly dismissed by some non-EBERRON folk. They tend to forget that the setting was built from the ground up to incorporate most of what D&D 3e had to offer. As such, it makes it somewhat easier for creative GMs to utilise this material for their campaigns -- simply by adapting what's been referenced, and giving it an essential Realmslore-tweak.
True, thank you. Just saying that I remember when...now I feel old.

From a lore standpoint, I thought it was pretty good.
From an editorial standpoint, there are some minor tweaks I'd do here and there. Mostly punctuation, but one or two spots where I'd change the wording.

I see nothing wrong with incorporating Eber-whatsit material, so long as it can be divorced from its original setting and made to fit in the Realms. I've actually thought of a couple of versions of warforged with purely Realmsian origins.

Now that I've had a chance to read it...
I like that you've borrowed from various sources -- particularly noteworthy EBERRON books.
I can't really comment on the mechanics side of things, but I feel you've given darkwood the Realmslore touch it needed. Good stuff! |
