Here is what I have for a story arc I want to start for a lvl 3 group (3.5 ruleset) in the Forgotten Realms setting of course. They have recently completed a brief adventure of exploration into the Forest of Tethyr.
Story Arc: The players have recently completed there exploration of a Human monastery built in the Forest of Tethyr. They are returning to Mosstone after having experienced a series of atmospheric distortions that appear randomly in the air about them as they move through the forest. The story begins with one of these larger distortions sweeping across the entire group. (DC 20 Fortitude save or be nauseated.)
With no other visible effect from the event they will continue on their return trip to Mosstone. (Without much incident).
Little do any of them realize, the Mosstone they return too bears little resemblance to the one they left. Instead, the city is controlled by a force of militant Druids, members of a sect of Mielikki know as the Shadowweirs.
* Shadoweirs
This group serves as a type of religious knighthood of the woods. Members are activist and proselytize with zeal, and are willing to go on the offensive on behalf of their sacred forests. They seek to advance the regrowth of ancient forests reduced by civilization, and to halt the endless assault of civilization on their ancient homeland.
This particular sect controls the trade city, having reinforced its normal wall with an additional 10ft tall black thorn barrier that seems to shift and sway slightly in the wind. (The player's first indication that something may be amiss).
Typical garb for the Shadoweirs of Mosstone are robes of dark emerald green trimmed with black. They wear heavy cowls usually up, the edges of which are decorated with nature glyphs that denote authority and status.
DM Note: The players have crossed into a more dangerous realms than they left behind. Two of the party members are elfs, and I thought it might be cool to have the elves of this setting restricted, (Perhaps not allowed outside the area's of the Forest without permission of the druids..)
