Posted - 29 Aug 2008 : 18:44:20 Hello guys,
I am in the process of starting a new campaign. I have the idea in my head buit I need some help with the (very important) details.
It's going to be a campaign with 2 PC's, I want it too be an urban campaign that is about intrigue and betrayal. My plan to do this was to put the entire city into a "war". A war might no be the good word, but I want to to turn the city into a battleground for several factions. These factions will work either publicly or secretly against each other.
Now my questions is.... What city would be appropiate for this type of campaign? It's plain 3.5 and near the end of 1372 btw.
Any other ideas, are ofcourse welcome.
Thanks in advance, Shandiris |

PS: Should this be moved to campaign logs, since I am planning to keep writing about the sessions or should I just make a new topic there?
I can move it there, if you'd like me to. |

First of all, thanks for the ideas.
The campaign finally started, in the end I went for Calimport because a fellow DM reccomended it and lended me his 2e books :).
But the characters didn't go typically at all with their background. They're a young Thayan wizard and his hobgoblin bodyguard on the run since their family was murdered by other Red Wizards. (They don't know why, and left it to me to fill it in. Any ideas on this?)
They ended up in Calimport, and in their first session tried to stay low in an inn, but when an thief peeked trough their keyhole they dragged him into their room. They then tied him up and threw him in the closet. And went shopping for supplies. The thief escaped with the help of his partner thief, and they set up a little trap in their room. The PC's meanwhile went shopping and checked out the knive the thief had on him, an ironsmith recognized it as one used by the local's thieves guild. When he asked them, how they got it, they said they bought it in Baldur's Gate. (He doesn't believe them and plans to tell the thieves guild in exchange for a reward.) When they return to their room in the inn, they open the closet but didn't see the thief's little surprise. So the trap went off and the whole room went on fire. They didn't bother to put out the fire but just jumped out of the window on the second floor.
And that is where the session ended.
PS: Should this be moved to campaign logs, since I am planning to keep writing about the sessions or should I just make a new topic there? |

Posted - 30 Aug 2008 : 11:41:34 My favorite city for intrigue campaign is Westgate.
It is quite well detailed and could be plenty as you like of factions. Also with the vampire infestation following the Manshoon War, it becomes even more darker.
I remember a campaign of mine in which all the faction I put in the city fight each other for conquering a powerful necromantic artifact. The artifact, called something like "heart of the city", was the hidden conscience of the whole city, and reflected through its appearance which was the winning faction of the moment (ie: looking rotten-sick if an evil faction was prevailing)

Any city would work, but some are more inviting to this kind of play.
Voonlar is a town ripe for lots of intrigue IMHO. You have the current Zhentilar faction, as well as Zhentarim inteference, as well as Harpers, Beholders, Hillsfar, Cormyr, Chauntea Church, interested Zhent merchants and nobles and disenfranchised locals, some of who back the law, some who oppose and some who want thier own rule. Add in a few random powerful 'monsters' that are attracted to all this scheming(a minor malaugrym, shapechaged spell casting Illithid slaver, Drow agents) and you have a mix of trechery and betrayal. All you need is two (or three, or four.....) rival thieves guilds/bandit groups and you have everything you need!
Of course Voonlar is nicely presented to you here so all the hard work of designing the major parts of the town are done for you, all you need to do is fill in the blanks.
Of course once the PC's get a few levels under their belt, they can easily be drawn into the bigger pond of a Zhentil Keep/Hillsfar/Cormanthyr/Dales/Cormyr intrigue campaign as they all 'fight' over this strategic town.
Just a quick thought and would be interested in hearing how it goes.
Cheers
Damian ps if you want a truely grandiose roleplaying campaign then go for Mulmaster or Zhentil Keep. If you have seen the TV series Rome you can simply replace the various families and leaders with Realms equivilants for a truely wicked and intrigue heavy political game where alliances change on a whim! |

My last big D&D campaign in the Realms was about a war between the Shadow Thieves returning to Waterdeep (before CoS was published!) and the groups already controling the illegal activitives (the Eye, the Unseen, etc.) |
