Hello. It's my first post here. One of my players wants to play the kenku character. There's not much info on kenkus in Realms. I found out that they live in cities of southern Faerun, the're assassins, many of them in Tethyr's capital and that's all. Do you know anything more? |

With the implementation of FR 4E, there is an area in the beastlands controlled by Kenku. The region is called Blackfeather Barrens. A town/ rookery inhabited soley by Kenku, is named Blackfeather. Page 97 of the FRCG. Not sure if this specific area was in existance in prior FR editions. |

There's a short blurb on page 87 of the 3.5 Monster Manual III:
"Kenkus inhabit cities across southern Faerūn, with a large but loose guild of thieves and assassins called the Daggertalons based in Zazesspur. Kenku living in the eastern nations of Veldorn and Estagund trace their ancestry even further east, to Kara-Tur." |

Author caveat?
Maybe he took an Epic feat for it (if your using 4e)?
Some Aearee decendent-races CAN fly, and I have the 2e Monstrous Compendium open in front of me right now, and it says they have both arms and wings. 
Since both appear to be canon, assume a sub-race of flyers, or possible something 'Elder Kenku' develop over time (which goes with the Epic Feat idea for 4e). Since the Dragonborn (no vomtting, please) are being handled this way, and its been mentioned that the Avariel might be handled the same way (an epic path off of Eladrin?), it seeems to make sense to me, for game balance anyway, to just take a feat for it at some latter stage in their life.
To tell you the truth, as I look at both ATM, it appears that link you have describes a PC-version of them, which had to have it's "wings clipped" for balance (and a LA+0). |

I was interested to see that there had been a kenku short story in one of the anthologies--I'll be looking for that this afternoon in the local shops--and so I did a little "search inside the booking" to see how they'd been presented.
They can fly? What?
That seems to contradict this:

My personal preference is that they are all of the same species, much the way the Elves have all diverged from common stock.
I would assume the original proto-Kenku to have been the Aearee.
There's also another variant - the Tengu, but they are much smaller, like the Kenku variant of a Halfling, and perhaps have an alternate heritage.
Since the Batrachi were a Creator race, that means they created a great number of other races, so it seems reasonable to relate all these FR flyers to them (and each other). |

There's a glimpse of Kenku culture and how they were enslaved as scouts for the Netherese in a short story called "Astride the Wind" in the anthology The Realms of Shadow.
I recommend it to anyone seeking to play a Kenku. Their naming habits, tribal organisation and history are all highlighted. |

From Prayers from the Faithful (2E book)
Reeatlann the Kenku has contact with The Key of the Faith, a Holy Prayer Book (relic) of Oghma the Binder. The year is noted as 1278DR.

I recall fighting some either in the sewers below Waterdeep or in Undermountain in the Eye of the Beholder game but anything can be portaled or teleported there from anywhere. Maybe he could be one such unlucky creature. |

I cant remember seeing anything else on kenku. Sorry. I think there might have been some information on their origin in one of the species in Mysteries of the Creator Races: The Aearee by Gray Richardson in the Candlekeep Compendium, but I am not able to check that right now. |
