I have a question for the scribes here at Candlekeep.

Have any of you used items made for 2nd Ed. in your 3.5 Ed game and if so how did it work out? Did you have to make adjustments to the item or not?

The reason for my asking is because I am thinking of using a 2nd Ed. item in my game. The item I am thinking of using is in the Encyclopedia Magica tomes(Vol 1, Pg. 173) and is called Blashphor's Magical Diapers and Crib of Pushing. if You have read either of the other threads that I started then you know why I am thinking of using these.

As they stand in 2nd Ed. I see no real problem in using them as is. especiall since they are used only in the rearing of children, and are not really all that powerful(except in keeping the child clean and alerting the parents to possible problems).

If it is not a problem with the moderators then I will post the description of the items if I am allowed to for those that do not have access to the Encyclopedia Magica series.

But I am interested in what you think, and look forward to your responses.

I really don't think it will cause a problem either Ergdusch, but I thought I'd get some input anyways.

So long as you follow that rule, you're good.

I'll send you an E-mail with the description and you can then tell me if I can post it or not, because it is a bit longer than two paragraphs.

One of the things that really bugged me about 3E was the removal of the spell rarity notes, and notes on which regions spells are more common in. Also, I preferred the more involved and mysterious item creation process in 2nd edition and the more individually crafted item approach it encouraged. I really loathe the Diabloesque item naming in 3rd edition. In general, the 3rd edition changes removed a lot of the character from the system and introduced a lot of downstream balancing concerns.

And now to reply without the mod hat on... If it's something not oriented to combat, I don't see any reason why not to use a 2E item.

I wasn't really happy with what 3E did to magic. There were some good developments, but at the same time, many of my fave magical items were changed or dropped. Wands of fire and wands of lightning, for example, got changed and depowered. Item recharging was ignored... And one of my fave items, the wand of misplaced objects, never made it to 3E.

Well, it depends on the item however you describe rather benign ones so it should not be a problem.

I have played mixed system games online and in general they have worked out fine. At times there was some OOC to explain the effect, but in general once explained the others playing acepte the spells.
In general most problems that occur in play are combat related, though complusion spells and things like wishes also can cause problems.

There id no reason you can not have a spell caster research a 2nd spell effect that did not make it into 3rd. Only posible changes might be terms used in spell and perhaps duration because rounds differ between the Editions.
