Hey all.

I've been thinking about running a campaign in Westgate, and I'm looking for as many sources as I can find relating to it. I've got Cloak and Dagger, the novel Masquerades and Lords of Darkness (for the stuff about the current Night Masks) but I'm really looking for anything else that might feature Westgate. Any ideas guys? Thanks.

Besides, we all know Batman [Khelben] resides in Waterdeep!

You know, with the recurring criminal, corrupted elements, I always kind of got the feeling that Westgate was the Gotham City of the Realms. Not that other cities aren't worse, just the feel of, "there are some good people here, but no matter how hard we try, the criminal element comes back again," sort of thing.

Disclaimer: I'm not, in any way, shape, or form, advocating any nobleman named Bruce whose manor is outside of the city walls, nor any cleric of Tyr named Gordon being involved in the Watch. The comment is meant as a VERY broad interpretation, not a specific thematic template.

I would also add the novel Curse of the Azure Bonds to the list of potential sources on Westgate. As for adventure ideas... "Rebel" Cormyreans, Fire Knives and the Cult of Garagos might be good "lesser" opponents (at least if you compare them to the Night Masks). I'd also love to run a module that featured the Hills of the Seven Lost Gods. Since Westgate has been ruled by a "wizard-king" from Netheril (and The Temptation of Elminster also features a hideout of Karsus himself near Westgate) you can use Netherese stuff as well. Hope that helps!

Dark, Gritty, Urban Fantasy City with large scale corruption, multiple powers vying for control. It's been memorably detailed in novels and sourcebooks, but not to the extent of other urban areas like Waterdeep.

It's quite different to the other urban settings in the Realms, such as .. uh, Waterdeep. I like it!

I guess they are really going to set up a bunch of "Shoutowns" and "Little Lungs" in some of the big cities. I don't quite understand the appeal of Westgate though. "I hear they have blood sucking undead and people love to stab each other in the streets!"

True, although that's in the "future" (I think 1381 DR?), as much as that might matter.

See the Night Masks novel as well. And Forgotten Realms Adventures and the 1e/2e FRCS. Sea of Fallen Stars and Pirates of the Fallen Stars. Ed's Temptation of Elminster provides some historical lore on the region in and around Westgate. Ed also detailed a building that exists in Westgate -- see Ed's '05 replies. As well, the web enhancement for Cloak & Dagger. See also the section on the "Order of the Purple Staff" in Champions of Valor.
