Greetings,

Is everyone here looking forward to the new FR sourcebook release Unapproachable East. I know I certainly am. Ever since the Spellbound campaign expansion I have enjoyed reading up about this exotic part of Faerun.

What does everyone else think .

Good learning...

Actually I know of some players who have made efforts to combine the two different settings...FR's Unapproachable East region with the Mahasarpa campaign. It is a very unique, and very interesting setting to role-play in.

I'll see if I can get the creator to send some notes over to you...

Well Met

Okay i only recently got my hands on this product and i thoroughly enjoyed it. In particular the East meets West vibe. I had been expecting something more eastern european/slavic in tone and was impressed with UE.

I liked the section on Teflamm (sp?) and the idea of a gang war between the Shadowmasters and The Golden Swords was most stimulating.(I.E. Last man standing style)

If i wasnt involved in a quest for Mahasarpa i might even set my next game in the UE.

I liked the Dragon Disciple PrC also, however I had a hard time finding a character for it. So I created a NPC who utilised the PrC, and now he is a regular feature of my Evermeet campaign.

As for the Blood Magus, which I also thought was an 'okay' PrC, I simply haven't seen a really justified need for him, since another similar PrC from a d20 third-party supplement has some improved features. The Blood Magist I think, although I could be confusing the title with another PrC.

That's funny , I run my campaigns with this time-tested method .

I actually rather liked the Blood Magus, Candle Caster, and Dragon Disciple prestige classes. I don't think they're really worth it, but I like the concept. Actually, the Candle Caster might be useful, though more as an NPC than anything else. I remember some magic candles in the game Menzoberranzan -- those were pretty neat, I thought. Of course, I'm big on how-many-ways-can-we-do-this,-and-which-will-be-the-most-fun approaches, so I like that sort of thing.

As for the Dragon Disciple, I think it offers a neat way to bring a half-dragon template into the game without having to give it to a first-level character and an ECL adjustment. I think it's actually too drawn-out to make it worthwhile for a player to use, but it's a good concept.

No worries Sage! I like to exercise my brain. Now if I could just get this Guiness keg underneath my abdomen taken care of all would be fine.

The Sage Posted - 29 May 2003 : 09:35:38
Hmmm..., thanks for the comments Mournblade. Actually you have made me see some of my favorites in the supplements in a new light. And as a comparison, obviously my players have the same feelings, because they agreed with your post as well.

Thanks,

May your learning be free and unfettered

Hmmm well first let me start with the Sword and Fist supplement. I LIKED some of the prestige classes, but if the book is so generic, why is it making prestige classes that COULD be considered generic campaign specific (i.e. Greyhawk)

The others seem like they are stretching it a bit. I especially disliked the Wizard kits. There just seemed to be a lack of story behind many of them. If you want to play a half-dragon that is fine, but why make it a prestige class? Also the Tome and Blood seemed to have prestige classes that were ACTUALLY alternate magic forms (Blood Magus, Candle Caster) and I do not find much room for them in the FR. The RUNECASTER works for me but when you start all of these alternate caster forms, it just becomes too jumbled. That is why I am glad the Options are out there, but not official. PALE MASTER and Blood magus are really a stretch.

Don't get me wrong some of the classes are VERY good, but I found too many of them that were shady in balance, and WEAK in story. Primarily I found them weak in story. When you just make prestige classes for the sake of filler, you are going to hit and you will miss. Defenders of the faith I managed to merge in perfectly with FR, but the others I omitted many classes.

I forgot to ask this earlier, but Mournblade, is there anything specific that you don't like about the PrC's portrayed in the supplements?. I am just curious, and I thought it would be interesting to compare your reasons with those of my players.

I agree Mournblade.

While there are a lot of FR PrC's, and finding characters for them can be a little overwhelming, like you, I like to use them as idea generators or potential adventure hooks. I find they work great.

And it's funny you mention the character classes in the supplments - none of my players like them either, they much prefer what FR has to offer.

I just don't have enough characters for all of these prestige classes. But what many prestige classes DO is give me springboards for adventures. I have to say the FR prestige classes seem to be better than the ones in the Character Class supplements (i.e. Song and Silence etc..)

Thanks George, but since I don't have the book yet it would be a little hard for me to read the credits .

I just basically wanted to know whether anybody has anything new to add.

Also, does anybody know who the artist for the front cover of the sourcebook was?.

The Sage Posted - 12 May 2003 : 09:30:50
Thanks George,

By the way, what part of Australia do you live in, because it hasn't been released where I am yet.

George Krashos Posted - 12 May 2003 : 04:07:31
Well, I've just got it and am pretty impressed. The only weaker section was on Thesk which focused on Telflamm to the detriment of that region IMHO. That said, the book is 192 pgs and the Thesk section is only 16 of that, so if you have an interest in the UE or want to game there, I thoroughly recommend it.

I for one am looking forward to this release. I have become even more intrigued since reading the re-releases of the Starlight & Shadows series of Novels.

Those witches of Rashemen do look intriguing and I am sure there will be even more goodies to look forward to.

If anyone wants to read up on it check it out at:-

Does anyone have it yet, care to share any spoilers, if it is allowed. I am curious as to whether it is worth the purchase.

Thanks.
