As previously reported, we will soon have a Drizzt comic. But, GamingReport.com has a news story providing details on the deal that led to this comic. Below is an excerpt from the news story:

Chicago, IL -- Mar 30, 2005 -- Devil’s Due Publishing (DDP) is finalizing negotiations to acquire the license to the entire D&D® library from the Hasbro Properties Group, the intellectual property development arm of Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:HAS). The proposed agreement will allow DDP to develop comic book and graphic novel properties based on D&D and its various universes, including Forgotten Realms®, Dragonlance®, Ravenloft(TM), Eberron(TM) and Spell Jammers(TM). When the agreement is entered into, beginning this summer, the rich world of Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeons & Dragons ® property will come to life through the efforts of DDP.
The proposed agreement contemplates that the rollout will begin in June (now confirmed via Diamond solicitations for Items Shipping in June) with a three-issue, 48-page mini-series based on New York Times best-selling author R.A. Salvatore’s Forgotten Realms: The Dark Elf Trilogy: Homeland. Forgotten Realms: The Dark Elf Trilogy, written by Andrew Dabb with art by Tim Seeley, will bring Drizzt Do’Urden(TM), one of the most popular and well-known fantasy characters in the Forgotten Realms, in a graphic format that would unveil the dark world of Menzobberranzan and the obsidian-skinned race of dark elves in a way that has never been seen before.
Under the proposed agreement, Forgotten Realms: The Dark Elf Trilogy would retell the tale of Drizzt Do’Urden as originally published in Salvatore’s three novels, Homeland, Exile and Sojourn. (The first issue of volume one of the series, Forgotten Realms: The Dark Elf Trilogy, adapting Homeland, has already been solicited via Diamond Distribution).
"This is a thrill," said Josh Blaylock, President of DDP. "Dungeons and Dragons started a whole new wave of outstanding fantasy novels. With compelling characters and gripping new worlds, and the creators we have can’t wait to start playing in the D&D realms. I know Andrew and Tim have been having fun working on Drizzt. DDP has also solicited the June release for the trade paperback of The Legend of Huma, a Dragonlance graphic novel based on Richard Knaak’s novel.

I'm not surprised... This is part of why I'd rather see new tales: now worries about staying true to the original story. We know that WotC can't even stay true to descriptions in their artwork, so why expect someone else to do so? |

Hmm... In one of the pictures, which we're told is Zaknafein vs. Drizzt, Zak seems to be holding a sword two-handed. But I distinctly recall that Zak fought with two longswords. |

No sign yet that these guys actually like the Realms, or that we'll be getting original Realms comics -- in contrast to what they're saying about Eberron. |

GamingReport.com has posted an interview with Mark Powers, Senior Line Editor for Devil's Due Publishing . Within the interview Mr. Powers talks about the Drizt comic as well as the Legend of Huma & Eberron works. Sample artwork is also included with the interview.

Some situations of new versus old are pretty easy....say for a certain dark elf trilogy that Elaine Cunningham wrote...

The artwork is part of the reason I think they'd be better going with all-new tales. As a group, we can't even agree which looks better: the original cover or the new cover of a book. If we can't agree on something as simple as that, then we'd never agree on artwork in a comic.

I'd heard about the DL details a while back... and the possibility for the TPB. There's also rumours that the Legend of Huma series will be completed entirely.

Wow, the Dark Elf trilogy with pictures. That will be totally ... redundant. New tales would interest me - recycling old stuff holds no interest for me, even if we do get pretty pictures.

Depending upon which old tales are selected I'd be interested in both. Right now, best of luck to them with their first series, but unless I see some exciting preview art that I like, I'll take a pass. |

I'll be happy if they tell some original Realms stories. I'd far rather see a new tale than a different version or presentation of an existing one.
And it's interesting that "Spell Jammers" got mentioned. The Spelljammer line had only the one novel series, and AFAIK, it didn't sell all that well. If they bring that line back (without mangling it the way the 3E adventure did), then I will be one happy hamster. |
