I also decided to pick up the Dragonlance issues as well, all of the material put out by Devil's Due look to be very high quality. Whether you care for the subject matter or not, they seem to have good writing and excellent artwork. |

I think I'm going to pick up the DL ones as well... hope they do them justice as well.

What do you guys think of the artwork for the comics? I love it.. I thought the artist really did a great job in his concepts of Menzoberranzan and the characters themselves (Especially Vierna, who is the hottest Drow ever.. ok, maybe Danifae). Anyway, what do you guys think about it?

It looks really good. When is it coming out?
The first two issues are already out. I was really impressed with all of the artwork. Good concept on the Faceless One - really done quite well. I think the also touch on the best parts of the story as well.

Posted - 30 Jul 2005 : 00:52:16 I can't provide the exact quotes, but some of the coments RAS had made about the Hunter's Blades trilogy and the upcoming Sellswords books almost made it sound as if he promised WOTC a Drizzt trilogy, so that he could do a few books that didn't feature Drizzt. He didn't say that exactly, and it may be my wild imagination, but a few of his comments certainly made it seem like the trilogy came first to "pay for" the Sellswords book.
But on the comics front . . . I am still getting this for my Step Son, not only to get him some kind of Realms reading experience (my step daughter went to the school library and found a copy of City of Ravens to read before she started raiding my books . . . must have needed independant verification of my taste, lol), but also hopefully the support will intice them to do some original comics in the Realms. Heck, maybe a few will actually not have drow in them . . . lol. |

Yeah, but he's not breaking from the Drizzt pantheon. It's not a Drizzt book, exactly, but it ties into the other Drizzt books and features characters intro'ed in Drizzt books. So it's practically a Drizzt book.
No, I think RAS would like to write about another section of the Realms, with all new characters, like he did with the Cleric Quintet. But WotC, know what sells, keeps saying "More Drizzt! NOW!" |

Posted - 29 Jul 2005 : 05:16:38 No worries. We've all got our opinions.
I, too, have read just about all of the Drizzt books at least 5 times (save for the most recent ones)... I read quickly, and rereading books doesn't bother me. But I've not touched anything Drizzt-related for over a year now. I like variation, and all that Drizzt was just overwhelming for me. |

I am Dark elf, icewnd, clerical quintet, legacy of drow, paths to darkneww, all of the spider queen books out as of now. i just love drizzt (not in a freaky way) iv ready dark elf 5 times. just hate to see ppl say there bored of him. in my opion if i could get a job like Ras's i would make books about drizzt till i die... i think he is awesome |

During the early nineties, as one of Marvel's flagship characters, Spider-Man had four monthly books, a team up book, a quarterly book, and various one shot specials a year. And his sales started to fall. Especially during the fiasco affectionately known as the Clone Sage.
Ah, Maximum Clonage... a great story handled poorly .
quote: The difference being that WOTC knows Drizzt sells, and as such definately nudges RAS to write Drizzt. You can't blame WOTC for wanting to make money, or RAS for writing his most popular character, but one of the reasons I shy away from getting too hard on RAS instead of simply the plots that I don't like, is that I think left to his own devices, RAS would be doing a few more diverse characters and/or types of stories, branching out more.
That's always been my view as well. RAS has populated each of his tales with wonderfully diverse characters who, if given the opportunity to shine on their own, would significantly expand upon his reader base considerably.
WotC seem to be a proponent of the "go with what works" technique. But a little diversity now and then is not only necessary, but expected as well... especially by those of us who have been fans of such characters and writers since the beginning. It's hard for the more recent devotees of all-things-Drizzt to see this in the same light as we do, simply because they have not "lived" with the character of Drizzt for as long as we have.
There's nothing wrong with that, it is just simply fact.
To make another comparison, look at Raistlin from DL. It's taken nearly twenty years for this well-loved character to be "retired" from the main line of DL novels. Many will say that Raistlin sold DL books, and for the most part, that is true, but I've been with Raistlin since the publication of Chronicles and I for one was happy to see him finally "hang up his staff" just a few years ago.
But yet, message boards are still plagued with requests from more recent fans saying "When are we going to see more about Raistlin?"
quote: Also, I hate to bring this up, but as far as the setting as a whole goes, Drizzt has never really made a significant impact on the Realms. He is a regional character, well known in his sphere of influence. I give Kudos to RAS for making this an in-joke that Jarlaxle keeps expecting surface dwellers to be impressed when he drops Drizzt's name, and no one yet has heard of him. Bruenor is far more influential to the setting as a whole as far as RAS characters are concerned.
Actually, that's something about the Drizzt novels that I've always liked. RAS tales never really impact upon the greater Realms (mostly), and so they are a refreshing break from the more recent trend of FR novels that concentrate on stories that have significant effect on the lives of people and places in the Realms.
quote: Don't get me wrong, I like Drizzt. But I've been reading about him since the early 90's -- well over ten years now. I am, quite simply, tired of him. I got tired of reading about him a while ago, but we keep getting more and more...
Yes, as I said earlier... for those of us who have been with Drizzt since the beginning, it is hard for us to look at such a concept as a "Drizzt comic" as welcome news.
quote: I don't want to see him die. I just don't want to see him as much. I want a break from Drizzt. I've read so much about him that I've lost interest in him.
And neither do I.
Although, I haven't lost interest in Drizzt. I'm approaching the entire phenomenon with a more "there's really nothing new here" frame of mind. I'm hungry for something else from the quill of RAS. 'Tis probably why I've now started to read his Demon Wars books.
quote: I'm not picking up these comics because I've had too much Drizzt. I've OD'ed on him, as it were. Maybe in another year or two, I'll be willing to give these books a shot, but for now, it's been too much in too short a timespan.
I'll probably pick them up in a year or two, but only as a TPB.

Posted - 29 Jul 2005 : 02:06:03 I agree with KnightErrantJR. Just because he's a good character, it doesn't mean they need to keep giving us more of him.

I also am of the opinion that RAS would like to branch out, but isn't really being given the chance. WotC knows Drizzt sells, so they keep wanting more of him. Certainly, the sales help buoy the entire product line, but as friend Knight points out, too much of the same thing can kill the market.

Posted - 29 Jul 2005 : 01:55:27 While I respect your opinion, allow me to expound upon mine. First off, I love the Icewind Dale trilogy and the Dark Elf Trilogy, and at one time the only character in all of fantasy literature that I liked more than Drizzt was Caramon from DragonLance. Then I kept reading . . .
When some of us talk about how we are tired of Drizzt, we don't nessisarily propose that he be killed, retire, or dissappear. Some characters just need some time off, or need to be put into new situations. In fact, I rather liked Drizzt working on Duedermont's ship hunting pirates. It was new and interesting, and he was constantly sulking.
Let me make an comparison. Drizzt is a great character. So is Spider-Man. During the early nineties, as one of Marvel's flagship characters, Spider-Man had four monthly books, a team up book, a quarterly book, and various one shot specials a year. And his sales started to fall. Especially during the fiasco affectionately known as the Clone Sage. The point being, you can have too much of a good character. Now, the Spider-Man movies are excellent, and the writting on the actual book has improved greatly, now that the number of books slowed down, some perspective was gained, etc.
The difference being that WOTC knows Drizzt sells, and as such definately nudges RAS to write Drizzt.

All this having been said, I will likely pick up the books. Especially for my step-son that has not the patience for reading novels, yet has torn voraciously through every X-Men graphic novel I have ever gotten him. |

DRIZZT MADE FORGOTTEN REALMS BETTER! wth drizzt sales spiked with drizzt readers fell into love with ras's books. IF IT WEREN'T FOR DRIZZT, WULGAR, BRUENOR, ETC. F.R. WOULDN'T BE AS IT IS TODAY! PEOPLE SAYING DRIZZT IS GETTING OLD IS LIKE SACRILAGE TO MY EARS! YES I LIKED THE CLERICAL QINTET BUT DRIZZT FAR SURPASSES ANY OTHER F.R. CHARACTER! and if you say drizzt is getting old, they need other books, that will put a tear on the company! if they kill him off the sales will drop imensilly!
IN OTHER WORDS...DRIZZT IS THE BEST AND WILL STAY THE BEST FOR THE REMAINDER OF HIS LIFE AND BEYOND! i WILL MISS HIM SORLY BUT ALL WE CAN HOPE IS THAT HE WON'T DIE! or else the company will drop sales imensilly |

Vierna and Malice. Wowsers! I'll be their "second boy" any day.
The art in Battle Chasers was okay, but not my favorite. I loved the art in Sojourn -- it was prolly the best art I've ever seen in any comic, much less a fantasy one. |

Posted - 29 Jun 2005 : 23:15:10 I hope this isn't considered spam/overkill, but Devil's Due Publishing has just posted a six-page preview of the first issue of the comic. This preview includes text boxes and speech bubbles, so it gives a better impression of the adaptation, I think, than just the art did.
EDIT: Here's an early snapshot review of the comic book. |

I have no such expectations. I just want new characters and new stories. They did it with two previous comic titles, and they do it all the time with new novels.
That's probably the only way I'd consider picking up new comics -- I'm not after comic interpretations of old tales (although that DL Legend of Huma series was a work of art!).
