Here are the Great Dale pages from the upcoming Forgotten Realms Player's Guide.

Heh.

I feel pretty indifferent to this excerpt, and nothing good or bad to say about it.

I do not think one can compare FRCS and old FRPG with the new ones, since the old FRPG isn't a players guide in the strict sense of the word like the new FRPG, but the 3.5 update to the FRCS, and as such it contains no information about the region at all, leaving only the old CS for comparing old and new. The chapter in the FRCS is, in my opinion equal to FRCG and FRPG, giving information about look and feel of the place as well as about economy and other things.

Man, I know I started it, but disentangling those acronyms makes my eyes cross!

Anyway, your equivalency seems fair to me. And I definitely learned something new (about the previous Player's Guide being the 3.5ification of the previous Campaign Guide). I never played 3rd, and only recently picked these up (along with 3E guides to the Silver Marches, the Serpent Kindoms and the Underdark and a 2E Dalelands book by "L. Richard Baker III") at Half-Price in exchange for a stack of ARCs. I started my 4E FR campaign before 4E FR was technically available so I was basing things off articles, Swordmage (by just plain Richard Baker ) and decades old grey box memories.

And then there is of course the truly exhaustive chapter in The Unapproachable East ...

I know, I know, unfair!

Nope, not quite. The one you link to is an excerpt from the FRCG, this is an excerpt from the FRPG. Not that there's a whole lotta difference, either way.

Wow... didn't even notice the difference!

Either way, both excerpts could have been lumped into a single 'Great Dale' thread for discussion purposes.

And its not so great... but then again, it never really was. More like the *Meh* Dale to me.

Hmmm, I don't know. The two excerpts seem to at least equal and perhaps surpass the information on the Dale I find in my 2001 FRCS and 2004 FRPG (I'd have to do a word count, for whatever value raw quantity of verbiage has). Plus, there's a map.

That said, maybe the information on the Great Dale to be found in those books--or in the gray box, for that matter--can be fairly called sparse as well. I suppose it depends on the individual reader's needs (or tastes).

Granted this is from the players guide to the realms, but the following non-essential stuff is missing IMO:
- Trees (there are several forests there)
- climate
- how the people survive (hunting or agriculture or air or magic?)
You could argue that no one is interested in these details, but its these small things that make a campaign come alive. None of these infos are in the campaign guide either I think.

On the other hand I really dont know why ideas for adventures are in a book for the players. The "adventuring motivations" is always a questionable thing, because it will probably create a lot of stereotype characters if people use it and if people dont use it it is wasted ink.
