I noticed on Amazon.com that Wizards will be reprinting book 1 of the Prism Pentad Dark Sun novel by Troy Denning in September.

Not only are they reissuing it, but they are going with the larger trade paperback (9.6x5.2 inch size) for $12.95, rather than the mass paperback size most DnD novels are printed in.

Here

Now, there is not a hint of this on the Wizards website, so I do not know what is going here.

Perhaps Wizards may be planning to eventually revive the Dark Sun world?

It fits into their new 4e "points of light" scheme better than any other game setting - tyrannically controlled city states surrounded by vast swaths of untamed, savage land.

I'm not entirely sure. I used to keep in regular contact with some of the folk over at athas.org, but kinda fell out of the loop a while back. I don't really know what their current plans are for 4e DARK SUN.

That should be very interesting. After not receiving any support for nigh on a decade or more, to suddenly have a new and different ruleset as official could be welcomed or hated. Any idea if they have looked at 4th Edition over there Sage?

They also took back their rights to Ravenloft, so thats another possibilty for future settings.

And since they have said they were doing a psionics book (which will probably be released to coincide with Eberron), there's realy no reason why they can't do a 4e version of Dark Sun.

All they have to do is drain every once of flavor out of it.

I should have phrased that differently - "I hope the Dark Sun reprints weren't canceled along with the Ravenloft reprints that were canceled"

My poor wording was to fault there

The fact that Amazon doesn't have a cover for it yet and its due to be printed in two and half weeks is not encouraging!

I do hope the novel reprint wasn't part of their fiction shake down. I was looking forward to reading these again.

Dark Sun had a life that was all too short. In fact, it would fit perfectly as one of Golarion's moons... Hmm...

I'm not sure what's happening with those. It's likely that they become another casualty of the novel cancellations recently proposed by WotC. We also know the new RL novels scheduled for release sometime this year are no longer happening.

I have to check out the book, as I never got into those.

On a side note, did they ax the reprints of the ravenloft books??
Ashe Ravenheart Posted - 26 Aug 2008 : 22:18:44
Next year's setting is Eberron. They haven't announced the setting for 2010 yet, but it should be either Dark Sun or Dragonlance (since they pulled the rights away from Margaret Weis' Sovereign Press). Since they are announcing the re-release of the novel, I'd say they are leaning towards Dark Sun.

Psionics would be easy to translate into 4ed powers. Of course, they would be nothing like previous edition Psionics (like Magic in 4ed).

They said that they were planning to print one game setting a year. I hope Dark Sun is next year's setting.

If they aren't going to print a campaign guide for it, my other suspicion is that it will be revived on DnD Insider.

In either case, I liked Dark Sun. I look forward to reading these books again.

I dont think psionics fits into the "once per encounter power" style of 4e and Dark Sun without psionics is unthinkable.

This is good news. I've been looking to replace my "very used" copies of the Prism Pentad for some time.

Now, if only WotC would re-print the "Dwarven Nations" trilogy for the DRAGONLANCE line of novels.

Didn't I read something about them not wanting to drown the market in 'settings' books?

Some people would claim FR without Mystra, or her Chosen, and with the mess of demihuman deities is unthinkable.

"In 1991 best-selling author Troy Denning introduced the world to the post-apocalyptic world of Athas, and almost twenty years later it remains one of the most talked-about and fan-requested settings in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. These deluxe trade paperback reissues will introduce a whole new generation to the magic-blasted deserts of the Dark Sun world!"

To quote Amazon...
